• Text-Based Browser for Commodore 64 Ultimate

From Lumni@VERT/LUMPLYHS to All on Thursday, March 26, 2026 09:42:00
Has anyone seen a Lynx/Links type text browser that works with the C64U?

I found some old ones from like 20 years ago, but of course they don't work on the C64U.

    Or is anyone programming one?
    Just wondering

Do you mean native ones? Cause there are a bunch of online ones. Both in 40 and 80 columns...

As for a native browser, it's probably possible, but it doesn't seem like you'd get much reward out of one, when you can use one through a BBS or something.

In the spirit of the Commodore, I thinkwe're gonna have to build it
ourselves. Let me know if you
find one though, that'd be sick.

I am just learning to program r/n
but what little I know about the
    hardware/C64U hardware emulation, I
feel like you'd have to make use
of the REU somehow to make even
a text browser work, if indeed
    it can.

I'm curious what message editor you're using? Most of the linses in your message are fairly short, but every so often there are some long lines.

His "NOTE" kludge says "Synchronet msgeditor master/775e87a61", and "COLS" kludge states 40. So mayhaps it has something to do with using that editor in 40 col mode, but something with "flowed" text is still sneaking in there at times? Either way, I've noticed it, too.

Ah yes, the elusive "Registered/Nurse" language.

Sorry that's the best joke I've got.

I'm using the UltimateTerm d64 image
that comes included with the C64U. I
    have had pretty erratic performance
    responding to messages here regarding
formatting. I though it was an issue
with word wrap but honestly I have no
idea at this point. I'm just rolling
with it. From my perspective my
    messages appear to occasionally have
    words get smashed together without
spaces and I haven't found out how to
make that not happen. And editing is
basically impossible, when I try to
edit a message, the lines I move the
cursor to change to various lines of
the message, to the point that I have
no idea what I'm editing anymore. So, Ijust post and cross my fingers it's legible. Seems a winning strategy.

Have you changed your settings to use the line editor instead of some full screen one? You wouldn't arrow around in the line editor, just do stuff line by line and use the / commands. I use C64s, Atari 8bits, 68k Macs, etc. with many different terminal programs. The simpler it is on the other/server side, the better it is for my local terminals.

I'll play around with it later and see
if I can get better results.

    Gracias.

    Thought about using a different
    program?

Probably eventually, but I am still
shocked by the sheer volume of C64
    software that exists, decrepit though
it may be. At some point when I stop
being lazy I'll see what the other
options are out there and wht works
    best.

And to be fair, I ONLY have trouble
here. Every other BBS I like to visit
    works fine.
