               LANARK COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY NEWSLETTER

                               NOVEMBER 1994

The regular meeting of the Lanark County Genealogical Society was
held on November 2, 1994 in the library of Algonquin College,
Perth.

The business portion of the meeting began at 8pm when the
President, Marilyn Snedden, welcomed the gathering and requested
that all new members introduce themselves and state the families
they are researching.

Members in attendance included: Rob Allan, John F. Belisle, Cecil
Buck, Marion Cavanagh, Cathy Cousens, Marion & Warren Craig,
Charles Dobie, Dave & Betty E. Findlay, Carmel Ferguson, Russ Ford,
Dorothy Frizell, Helen Gillan, John & Hilary Hay, Louise Hope, Jean
Hossie, Lorne Hunt, Don & Amy Hutchings, Audrey Lackey, Dorothy
Lewis, Edwin & Mildred Livingston, J.R. Ernest Miller, Ann
MacPhail, Don Oliver, Barbara Purdy, Theresa McKenna, Ann McKenna,
Stuart & Peggy McEwen, John Morrow, R.E. Sargeant, Marilyn Snedden,
Valorie Vincent and David & Irma Willoughby.

In the last minutes it was reported that Elmwood Cemetery included
3377 names, this should actually read 8377 names. Another
correction is that Dan Findlay's name is actually Dave Findlay.
Sorry about that Dave, the secretary is getting old and needs new
glasses, or a new secretary! Moved by Alice Hughes and seconded by
Edwin Livingston that the minutes be approved as corrected. Motion
passed.

Treasurer Helen Gillan reported a bank balance of $1717.03 after a
deposit of $233.73 with outstanding bills of $237.71 for printing
of the newsletter, $57.50 for memo cards, $107.75 for stamps, $5.74
for envelopes and $5.00 for a copy of the Highland Line Cemetery.
Moved by R.E. Sargeant and seconded by Mildred Livingston that the
outstanding bills be paid. Motion carried.

The President thanked Charles Dobie for his donation of a set of
six volumes of Annotated bibliography of genealogical works in
Canada. Thanks to Charles from all of us.

The President showed us a copy of an application for a Royal Award
which you may receive from Australia if you send in twenty dollars
and postage. We do not expect to many of these to arrive, but if
you do procure one, let us know so that we may prepare a throne!

Marilyn Snedden asked for volunteers to assist in answering queries
which we receive. Cathy Cousens indicated that she was willing to
assist. We would like to have a few more volunteers, so if anyone
can be of assistance, we would appreciate the help!

The President suggested that we consider a project to list all
members and the families that they are researching. We hope to
establish such an endeavour in the new year. Marilyn also
displayed a map of Lanark County which will be available for a
package for new members which is presently being assembled.

It was suggested that meetings be held on a Saturday for the months
of February and March as opposed to our regular Wednesday evening
time to eliminate the need to travel at night during inclement
weather. It was then moved by Peggy McEwen and seconded by Helen
Gillan that the February meeting be held on the first Saturday of
that month in Smiths Falls. Time and place to be given at a later
date. Motion approved.

John Morrow will try to arrange a meeting at the LDS Family Centre
in Smiths Falls during this period.

The following individuals volunteered to serve on a nominating
committee: Stuart McEwen, Helen Gillan, Mildred Livingston and
Russ Ford.

The President then introduced John Hay from the Ottawa OGS who
spoke on his experiences in Scotland doing family history research.
John listed the many records, indicating where they may be found
and illustrated his talk with details of his own experiences. This
was a well documented presentation which kept us all enthralled.
One very important point that John stressed was the fact that you
should do your homework before searching through the records in
Scotland. One reason is that you will be more prepared and also
because many of the records are available from various sources here
in Canada, most notably the LDS Centres. By being well prepared
before searching through the Scottish records you can save yourself
time and money! Thanks John, we really appreciated your effort,
you held us all enthralled to the end.

The remainder of this newsletter is devoted to publishing the
Paisley Townhead Emigration Society listing. These were "found" by
Jerry McGregor and were transcribed by the very patient Marilyn
Snedden!

A casual conversation while lined up for lunch at the Subway has
resulted in the sharing of an important "find" in the National
Archives!
Jerry McGregor of Ottawa lives near the Archives and has spent many
hours searching for his ancestors in their files. When looking
through microfilm B-880, he chanced upon the following listing
which he showed to the archivist on duty who expressed great
interest in it. It is a listing from 1820 of people from the
Paisley area in Scotland who were being recommended to the British
Government as being worthy of assistance to emigrate to Upper
Canada.
This document gives the applicant's name, his age, where he was
born, his trade and present place of residence as well as his
wife's age, her place of birth and the ages of their children (male
and female). In some cases, the handwriting was very difficult to
decipher; in those instances you will find a (?) on our copy.
Preceding the listing on the microfilm is a letter which was
written in Paisley, Scotland on Sept. 28, 1820 to the Earl of
Bathurst by the Paisley Townhead Emigration Society requesting
confirmation of the names of people being sent to Canada. The
Society was requesting confirmation as it was the custom to give
notice to the landlords by the 11th Nov. if they wished to keep
their rental accomodation after the 11th May the following year.

This microfilm is available at the National Archives (or through
inter-library loan) as reel B-880 and is titled: Colonial Office -
Original Correspondence - Secretary of State. Contents of this
microfilm also include: Emigration 1820 - North America Offices
(contains petitions from individuals telling why they should be
allowed to emigrate) as well as smaller listings from 3-4 other
Societies, most of whose people actually did emigrate.

Due to space constraints, we had to abbreviate the place names in
our "version" of the Paisley Townhead Emigration Society listings.
The following listing is a guide to those abbreviations.
