This quiz is not really a quiz. You are not expected to know the answers.
The answers meant to "shock" you more than anything.
If you decide to take it, just "go with the flow", pick any answer and what
is more important, read the explanation. Ignore the score.
Some of multiple choices were intended to be weird.

Fact:
In 1990, a very large study was done by CDC or Center for Disease Control.
The study involved a spectacular number, 1,366,537 HIV-antibody tests.

When you are answering the questions, take the following into consideration:

a) The above information was found in the October 23/30, 1991 JAMA (Journal
of the American Medical Association)

b) The Author of the Simulator called CDC in September, 1991 and asked for
the "official number of estimated HIV positive people in U.S.A." and he was
told it is 1,000,000 which is less than 0.5% of the population.

How many percent of the tested 1,366,537 was HIV positive?
1. Less than 0.5%
2. Between 0.5 and 1%
3. Between 1% and 2%
4. Between 2% and 3%
5. Between 3% and 3.5%
6. More than 3.5%

The correct answer is 6
A breathtaking number of 3.7% of the 1,366,537 people was HIV positive.
The official number of HIV+ people in USA is 1 million. That is 0.4% of the
population. CDC announced that the above mentioned study "doesn't count"
because it was not done on the typical cross-section of the people in USA
(where did they get 1.3 million non-typical Americans?).
!
According to HIV/AIDS Surveillance by CDC, September 1991 issue, how many
percent of AIDS cases were the result of Heterosexual contact?

1. 6% of ALL Adult cases, ever reported
2. 2% of Adult Male cases ever reported
3. 10% of people, age under 25, from September 1989 till August 1991
4. All of the above

The correct answer is 4.
So, CDC is reporting approximately 6% or a little higher involvement of the
heterosexual population in 1991, due to the somewhat higher rate among
adolescents. If that is the case......

2. 6%
3. 11.1%

The correct answer is 4
If you have any doubts about this data, please feel free to obtain the
October 23/30 1991 issue of JAMA, turn to page 2194 and read it.
Yes indeed, 3.7% of the over 1.3 million tests were HIV positive and out of
the HIV positive ones, 38.1% were the result of heterosexual contact.
A year later, CDC reports 6-10% heterosexual rate. Whatever happened to the
rest?
!
Will these new numbers become the guiding force behind AIDS policies?

1. Yes
2. No

The correct answer is 2
The last sentence on the page (in JAMA), is part of the CDC Editorial
Note:"Because the data in the report reflect characteristics only of
persons tested at public clinics, the findings are not representative of
all persons tested in United States."
Perhaps it is true, but there is a long way between 0.4% and 3.7%. There is
no way that 1.3 million people can be THAT untypical. In fact, the science
of medicine rarely has an opportunity to test or measure anything
1.3 million times, all related to humans. Most medications, medical
procedures, accepted protocols, new instruments, new methods, never get an
over 1 million chance to be tested, before implemented. I believe that the
study in question could have been used quite well, to estimate the true
number of HIV+ Americans. It did not happen. Why?
If CDC acts on their own, not utilizing that study was a major blunder. If
they follow some kind of "no panic policy" then where is THAT coming from?
A lot more questions .......
CDC still "molds" the results to be palatable to all tastes. Which sets up
the next question.
!
In the December 1988 HIV/AIDS Surveillance by CDC, the following number was
found by the Author:
|
23126 people died between 1981 and 1986 June in AIDS
How many people died between 1981 and 1986 June in AIDS?

1. According to CDC: 23126
2. According to an unknown source:16865
3. According to CDC: 16865
4. According to an unknown source:23126
5. 1,2 is correct
6. 1,3 is correct

The correct answer is 6 !!!
Yes, both 1,3 is correct. Or not. You'll be the judge.
@
According to the June 1991 HIV/AIDS Surveillance by CDC, between 1981 and
1986 June, 16865 people died as a result of AIDS.
6251 LESS than it was reported in December 1988. No, it is not a typo, it
isn't even one number, Author added up the numbers, after some graphic
curves (in his studies) crossed the "margin of sanity", so he looked into
the matter and found this surprising little information.
